Disability Basics

Learn common characteristics of a variety of disabilities including autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, seizures, cognitive delays and more. Handouts and resources will be provided for in-depth information.

Caring for Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

In this American Red Cross course learn information on how to care for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia as well as to handle common behaviors associated with the disease.

Assisting with Personal Care

Learn the skills necessary to provide personal care, including feeding, toileting, bathing and dressing, in this American Red Cross course.

Positioning and Helping for Movement

Learn how to safely position, lift and transfer individuals needing assistance with movement, in this American Red Cross course. Participants will learn the principles of good body mechanics, positioning, and how to prevent skin breakdown.

"Be the Horizon": Caring for Challenging Moments

Learn how to recognize when an individual is starting to become upset and how to minimize the severity of the interaction. This module will cover specific techniques in redirection, setting limits, recognizing functions of behaviors, and staying safe if an individual acts out, focusing on teaching participants how to be the calm during the storm.

Mandated Reporter Training

The Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Mandated Reporter Training Program (SCAN-MRT), developed by the Child Protection Center at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, is the basis of this training and participants will receive a certificate upon completion of this module.

Medication Administration

Learn safe administration of medication, including the five rights of medication administration, and methods to administer oral, topical, suppository and inhalant medications.

Free Time Activities/Adaptations

Learn how to fill "down time" and stay engaged in activities, both in the home and in the community. This module will cover simple adaptations for a variety of activities.

Communication Techniques

Experience a sampling of a variety of communication techniques which may be used by people with disabilities, such as sign language, picture systems and manual and electronic communication/talk boards.

Making Connections

Learn what to remember and questions to ask when beginning a new placement. Participants will examine their own strengths and weaknesses to better determine their limits when working with individuals with a variety of needs.
